Halstead: Shop steps in to save tourism centre
1:22pm Wednesday 17th March 2010
A DEPARTMENT store is opening a tourist information service to replace one axed in council cost cutting measures.
Chelmsford Star Co-operative Society Ltd plans to provide travel and tourist information for Braintree district at The Quadrant in George Yard, Braintree.
It follows Braintree Council's decision to close its own Tourist Information Centre at Braintree Town Hall by March 31 to save around £30,000 a year.
The centre provides information about tourist attractions across the district, including the Halstead area.
Brian Smith, general manager at Colne Valley Railway, said: "Something is better than nothing, but does it rally address the issue of whether the local council is taking the matter of local tourism seriously?"
