Adam hoping to keep his Games dream alive

11:06am Friday 20th January 2012

POWERLIFTER Adam Alderman is hoping to stake his claim for a spot at this summer’s Paralympic Games.

The 28-year-old, from Sible Hedingham, is taking part in a vital qualifier – his penultimate opportunity to secure a place in the Great Britain team.

He is heading to Cardiff for tomorrow’s IPC UK invitational tournament, at the Sport Wales National Centre, at Sophia Gardens.

And with just one more qualifier to come next month, he knows the stakes are high.

“There is quite a lot of pressure – the pressure I put on myself and also pressure from all my family and friends, who want me to do well,” Alderman, born with dwarfism, told the Gazette.

“But I feel confident and am still very hopeful I can do it. It would be amazing to take part in any Paralympic Games but especially in London.

“The squad won’t be confirmed until next month but I’ve got two qualifiers left – this one and the IPC Fazza, in Dubai (from February 21 to 26).

“Hopefully I can lift the weights I want to and my target is something in the region of 140kg or, ideally, 142½kg.

“I need to make sure I reach the criteria for selection – to be number one in my weight category and in the top-ten in the world. It’s tough but I’m training hard and doing all I can.”
